Total and Partial Meniscectomy

Abstract

Recent trend in meniscectomy of the knee is that a more favorable prognosis would follow after partial resection. The authors performed arthroscopy on 44 knees, in which the total meniscectomy was done in 38 cases and the partial resection in six. A comparative study was done for the local healing pattern of both the total and the partial resection of the menisci.
1. After total meniscectomy, the local replacement showed a definitely slender, loose structure with the inner margin which was frequently uneven and rough. It was apparent that the replaced meniscus had lost most of the original function.
2. Partial resection was followed by the healing pattern almost similar to that of total resection. In these cases, however, relatively well retained were the smooth surface and the elasticity, which could be regarded to still exert the function as meniscus.
3. The result of the above study has shown that partial meniscectomy may be the treatment of choice, when indicated, for the meniscal injury.
